Englert Launches New Responsive Website

$

For those of you who have not noticed, last month Englert launched a new responsive website.

We are pleased to announce that this new site has been very well received by both contractors and architects who specify or install metal roofing, wall panels and gutter systems.

The new website is responsive which means it will adjust to any size screen and can easily be viewed and navigated on any type of mobile device.

Mercer County Waterfront StadiumSince the old Englert website was such a popular destination for architects, contractors and building owners looking for information and ideas when designing new projects and since the site was the recipient of numerous design awards we wanted to keep the look and feel and many of the features as similar to the old website as possible.

The new site still features our easy to use metal roof visualizer, a beautiful award winning projects section as well as a comprehensive project photo library accessible by project type and roof color.  The new Englert website still features many informative and useful videos as well as our easy to use coil calculators and a convenient flash drive downloading station where architects and contractors alike can download the latest Englert brochures, project details and animations.

The site also features a special commemorative 50th anniversary section that will spotlight various contractors and architectural firms during the course of the year.

We hope you like it!

Smart Financing Offers you More Opportunities to Close Sales and Increase Revenue While Giving Your Customer That Metal Roof They Want

Having difficulty getting your customer to pull the trigger on that standing seam metal roof system you’ve been talking to them about. Are they convinced that the beauty of the metal roof and the durability that it offers is the right move for them but the cost is a little bit more than what they had budgeted?

We all know that a standing seam metal roof will last at least three times longer than an asphalt shingle roof and that a metal roof is much more energy efficient. Add to this the beauty of a standing seam metal roof and there’s no reason at all why you should lose a job once you’ve gotten a homeowner interested in the idea of replacing their shingle roof with a metal one.

Beautiful house with metal roofing. One of the most common obstacles to closing the deal on a residential standing seam roof is often the price. While the value of the roof and the expected lifespan more than justifies paying a little bit more – sometimes the homeowner requires a little extra incentive to finish off their dream home with that final touch of beauty and elegance offered by a metal roof. That extra push to get them over the hump could be to offer them an attractive financing option.

Most consumers when faced with a $60,000 remodeling bill may run for the hills if they’re required to pay the full amount up front with no financing option available. Well why should the investment in a new, much less expensive, standing seam metal roof or new gutters for that matter be any different?

Financing allows you to close more opportunities and ultimately frees you from being saddled with the burden of bad debt from slow paying customers. It’s a worry free sale. Your customer enjoys the benefits of their beautiful new standing seam roof and you get paid immediately … it’s a win/win.

Englert Metal Roofing Project in Franklin Tennessee Selected Winner of Metal Architecture’s 2016 Design Award for Metal Roofing

While we traditionally refrain from self-promotion within this space we couldn’t resist in this instance.  An Englert standing seam metal roof was selected by Metal Architecture magazine as the winner of this year’s design award for metal roofing.  Below is an overview of the project along with some photos.  Please note, if you have either designed a recent project with an Englert standing seam metal roof on it or if you are a contractor and have installed one that you feel may merit an award please feel free to contact your Englert representative or me directly with the details. Here are the details of this year’s winner – the Bells Woods home.Tucked within the rolling hills of the scenic rural countryside in Franklin, TN is a beautiful “rustic modern” home designed by Stevin Ginn Architects of Omaha, Nebraska. Built on 23 acres of breathtaking countryside this 5,800 square foot, two story, three bedroom home sits on a hillside and soaks in the sun and the wonderful views from dawn until dusk.

Belles Woods residential home with metal roofing. This uniquely designed home is the creation of owner David Bell who was also the general contractor and visionary of this rustic paradise.  Bells Woods as it is called is built from local Tennessee fieldstone and over 17 species of wood.  The home features very strong 25 inch thick energy efficient walls made from stone, insulation and concrete.  With over 1,350 feet of glass on the south side soaking in the scenery and bringing in light to the home.

Bells Woods was built with sustainability as an integral component to its design.  The home features a standing seam metal roof and is constructed of mostly reclaimed and recycled materials including the local fieldstone – prominent on both the interior and the exterior of the home and most of the lumber used to build the home.  Most of the structural wood used for the decking and beams is Douglas Fir collected by the homeowner David Bell, from trees that were being cut down locally.  Mr. Bell who has a very close relationship with the local arborists saw that these trees were being eliminated and made an offer to buy the lumber as he saw the trees being cut.  It was milled locally and stockpiled for the project.

He collected over 14,000 board feet of local lumber including cherry wood and oak to build his home.

The Tennessee Crab Orchard fieldstone is prominent throughout the area and is highlighted all around the property on walls and roads that predate the civil war.  These walls were erected by very skilled masons.  No mortar or dirt was used to build these walls.  The fieldstone walls were dry-stacked and have withstood the elements for over 250 years.Belles Woods Home in Franklin, TN features a standing seam metal roof.

Over 7,000 square feet of Slate Grey Englert Series 1000 1 ½ “ x 13”  standing seam metal roof installed by Don Kennedy Roofing of Nashville, Tennessee shrouds the home and its many passive solar overhangs and porches that protect the house from sun and rain (estimated annual rainfall of over 64 inches of rain per year). The edges of the standing seam metal roof tapers to provide a natural slope that leads to the stylish half round gutters where water flows down the unique chain downspouts and drains through the beautiful black Chinese river rocks below and into a rainwater harvesting system that captures the rainwater for re-use.

The roof edges are simple and clean with a shed style roof that runs east to west and an overhang in the south that filters the sun in the summertime.

The design features several striking angled columns that intersect and protrude through the overhangs representing centuries standing guard by the entrances of the home and protecting it from harm.  The metal roof sections where the columns break through the roof are beautifully flashed and caulked and the columns are capped to protect the end grains of the wood from damage.

Much of the flooring is a medium tone lime stone which soaks up the sun’s rays and provides warmth in the winter but stays cool in the summer.

The architect and owner wanted to blur the lines between the inside and the outside of the home.  To accomplish this they selected neutral grey granite floors on the ground level that runs from the interior of the house and travels through the glass wall out to the exterior of the home and towards the pool.

The property features a luxurious swimming pool, fruit bearing orchards and a beautiful stream running through it.

The owner – David Bell grew up on a farm in Nebraska in a town that his great grandfather founded called Bellwood thus the property name – Bells Woods.  His great grandfather, his parents before him and he were stewards of the land using the resources available to sustain them.  He understood the minimalistic values of taking from the land and giving back to it.  For this reason, sustainability, energy efficiency and low maintenance were so key to the design and building of Bells Woods and his commitment to giving back to the land was a driving force in the utilization of building materials from local resources that were already being destroyed  and repurposing them to build Bells Woods.

Looking For the Lowest Price Metal Roof Systems – Be Careful What You Wish For

$

How often are your decisions driven exclusively by price and nothing else?  If the answer is always, you may want to consider your reasoning moving forward. A metal roof system is more than just a temporary cover for a commercial building or home.  The quality of the material, the quality of the paint that covers that metal roof and the support that you get from the manufacturer covering both the material and the paint finish is critical.
Remember the old Chinese proverb – Be careful what you wish for.  Well, be careful because you might just get your wish!

How many times have you heard the story about the loyal, long standing customer leaving their current supplier in pursuit of a lower cost product?  It happens all the time.Paint peeling from a metal roof.

At first they’re thrilled because of all of the up-front money they believe they’re saving on the cheaper product.  But wait, two, three and four years into their cost reduction experiment their customers begin to experience the effects of weather erosion – including peeling paint and rust…. on dozens, sometimes  hundreds of roofs. The quality that they were used to getting, that they counted on, they were no longer getting with their new less expensive supplier. What a black eye!

How much do you think it cost them to save face, to fix the problems and salvage their reputation?

Well, they got what they wished for, what they paid for – a cheaper price and look what it cost them.

If you care about your business, your reputation and yes, your bottom line then make sure you know what you’re buying before you make the switch just to save a few bucks – it could cost you in the long run.

Looking to design or build elegant residential homes and offer your clients both beauty and functionality? A standing seam metal roof fits the bill. Combining the elegance and beauty your customers are looking for with the energy savings they require is the key to keeping them happy and generating referrals for years to come.

Standing seam metal roofs have become more popular than ever in residential construction. For the most part, a standing seam metal roof is maintenance free and will last at least three times longer than a shingle roof. Metal roofs offer architects and builders greater variety than tile roofs and they can be installed all over the country regardless of the climate in the region. A metal roof will perform better than a tile roof in more harsh environments that produce cold winters.Standing seam metal roof on Jupiter, FL home.

More importantly, standing seam metal roofs are sustainable; will reduce your customer’s energy costs substantially; and will not need replacing for sixty years or more.

Web Presence is Critical to Your Success

So you’re a roofing contractor that installs standing seam metal roofs or a small architectural firm that specifies metal roof systems and other building materials that skin the building envelope.

Is Internet marketing part of your marketing strategy?  If not you are missing out on a great deal of business.

Internet marketing is becoming more and more critical to the successful operation of businesses large and small.  If you’re not found then you’re not considered.

Internet leads are cheaper than most other lead sources and in the home improvement industry those leads can close at upwards of a 35% closing rate.Mercer County Waterfront Stadium

At the very least, every business should have a responsive website (a website that will adjust to fit the screen of whatever type of mobile device is being used) and if you are in a service business you want to prominently feature your projects and customer testimonials.  In addition to testimonials and customer reviews before and after pictures are also key along with case studies.

If you have a website but don’t do any Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to insure that your site is easily found especially locally then you are missing the boat as well.  Today Pay per Click (PPC) Campaigns are still very affordable and a great way to garner leads in your market at a relatively low cost.  You can run an effective PPC campaign for only a few hundred dollars each month by targeting keywords geared toward lead generation in your area of expertise.

It’s also become essential to have a social media presence on FaceBook, YouTube, Linked and other social media platforms.

Today an Internet presence is not an advertising choice but rather a necessity to sustain and grow your business.

If you don’t have a website and you don’t know where to start then talk to the marketing team with your metal supplier maybe they can provide you with a website template or a turnkey solution for building a website.

You Need a Metal Roofing Supplier That is on the Case 24/7

In today’s competitive business environment it’s critical to put your company in the best possible position to be successful.  It’s important that you align yourself with professionals that won’t let you down.

Whether you’re looking for a new supplier, contractor or sub-contractors to assist in completing your metal roofing projects you want to make sure that their values and goals are in line with yours and that they’re willing to work for you and your clients 24/7.

You want a supplier that can help create business opportunities and provide solutions for you whether you are an architect, a contractor or a building owner. Successfully completing a project is a team effort that starts well before the first slab of concrete is poured and doesn’t end until the customer is satisfied with the end result.

Sheets and coils of metal roofing in many colors. When it comes to a metal roofing supplier you want more than just a company that paints and sells metal coil.  You want a valuable partner that will assist you in not only completing projects but getting new ones as well. Look for a metal supplier that will research projects and provide you with leads and bid opportunities for both public and private work.

Choose a metal provider that is experienced enough to provide project consulting services and offers comprehensive spec review and spec writing services. A partner that can provide valuable assistance during the pre-bid and post-bid phase with bid submittal, engineering and shop drawing expertise.

Ideally you need a supplier who can deliver up to date product testing and outstanding weather-tightness warrantees and of course, one that offers exceptional product quality and service.Portable roll forming machine producing metal roofing panel

And if possible, always seek metal suppliers that offer a full array of continuing education courses and installation training to support you whether you are an architect who specifies metal roofing projects or a contractor who installs them.

The long and short of it is this – you need to partner with a metal roof supplier who will continually be there for you when and where you need them.

The Importance of Sharing Information Through Continued Education and Training

Knowledge is so critical to any business. Whether you’re an architect or a contractor who specifies or installs metal roof systems, gutters, wall panels or widgets.

It’s important that you and your entire team understand the products you offer regardless of whether you specify, sell or install them. It is equally important that your people are aware of what your customers need and why they need it.  In fact, it’s good to know what your competitors are offering as well.Learning through continued education.

Technology improves every day therefor most products experience some level of change on a fairly regular basis with regard to manufacturing, installation, sourcing of materials, pricing, freight and any number of conditions related to your business.

So many things affect the way in which we all do business. Besides technology there is the economy. There are changes with regard to the laws that can affect the success of your business. Politics can also play a key role with respect to initiating changes to your particular business landscape.

Continued education and training. It’s critical that you pay attention to what’s going on in the building products industry. In fact it’s important to be tuned in to what’s going on around the country in general (on both a macro and micro level). The internet can provide a great deal of information on general topics but it’s also critical to listen to your employees. Many of them work closely with your customers and your suppliers. I’d bet that most of them are knowledgeable with respect to your competitors as well.  Your people are your assets – they are constantly exposed to new information in the marketplace that could drastically have an effect on your business and its success. They are in many respects the face of your company.
Meet with them often and share any updates or new information you have so that they are better prepared to succeed.

We’re all very busy but if we can carve out some time to train and retrain our employees regularly on how to better serve our customers and continually offer them new information it will make a difference for all of us.  And remember it’s a two-way street – the knowledge that they can offer us is just as important.  Keep meeting with your people and keep training – you won’t regret it.

Safety Begins Before the Metal Roof or Gutter Installation

$

Over the last few years Metal roofing and gutter contractors have placed a great  deal of emphasis on job site safety. Deservedly so, as insurance premiums rise it is important that your installation crews follow the proper safety precautions when installing metal roofing, gutters or any other building or home improvement product. It is critical that your crews be trained and retrained regularly on these safety procedures.  Failure to do so could cost your company a great deal of money or worse.
These safety procedures are not just limited to the installation process but also may include the use of required safety equipment or the proper protective clothing.

This is not a new issue. Job site safety has been an important part of the home improvement and building construction industry for quite some time. But safety does not begin and end on the job site.  It is equally as important that your crews arrive to and from the job site safely as well. Vehicles should be properly maintained and all traffic laws should be followed to the letter. This means that crews should not be distracted while driving to and from the jobs. No phone calls, no texting, no eating or drinking and no filling out paperwork while on route to or from the job site.Safety starts with safe vehicles.

Many companies are beginning to install video cameras on their vehicles that record both the driver’s activities inside the vehicle as well as a view out the back and out the front of the vehicle. This is a great way to insure that your drivers are not distracted and the exterior views may come  in handy in the unfortunate event of an accident. It may just prove that your employee was not at fault.

The video views can be viewed real time on your computer or phone so you can monitor the activities of your crews 24/7.

There are also various tracking services that can be utilized that monitor speed limit and even proper driving (insuring the use of blinkers and proper breaking and turns). You can also govern the speed at which your crews can drive to insure their safe arrival to and from the job site.

Accidents are more common than you think and can cost you a fortune in insurance premiums and legal fees. More importantly however is the fact that you want to keep your employees safe both on the job site and away from it.

Choosing Metal for a Roofing

What to Consider When Specifying a Metal Roof for your Project

Specifying a metal roof for a new project? You should first consider the project’s proximity to the sea-coast. The marker of the industry, is a half mile from salt water to the project. This will be the indicator that will allow you to select the base metal for the application. If the project is going to be near the water, you will want to select an anti corrosive metal such as aluminum, pure zinc or copper. If the project is located away from the water, beyond half a mile, then you can look at some alternates like Galvalume or zinc-coated steel.

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0385.JPGThe second line of defense is the paint finish coating. Always make sure that the specs you’re using include high-performance coatings, and specifically one that contains PVDF. The most important property of high performance is that PVDF is 70% of the resin-binder portion of the mixture. This is considered the full strength level of PVDF.

Next you need to look at the standing seam metal roofing specifications and identify which standing seam profile is the best choice for the application. You can start by considering the standing seam system as it applies to the slope of the roof.

There are two primary classifications to consider: a hydrostatic system and a hydrokinetic system. The choice depends on the slope of the roof. If less than 3 on 12, you should consider a hydrostatic system, because water will shed slowly from the panel and there may be a potential risk of water intrusion. If the slope is above 3 on 12, you may want to choose a hydrokinetic system. In this case you can assume that the water will likely shed off rapidly from the surface of the panel and there will be less possibility for the intrusion of moisture.

With hydrostatic and hydrokinetic classifications in mind, you can now select the panel system based on its structural performance.

panel-illustrationsThere are two types of systems to consider – an architectural system and a structural system.

Architectural systems are classified based on the deck or the substrate of the system. They require a solid substrate, such as concrete, metal, or wood decking. The live loads on these panels are transferred to the structural deck below.

In architectural systems the span between the ribs of the panels ranges from 12 inches to beyond 20 inches, up to 24 inches. Also, the architectural panel will have a seam height of up to 1 ½ inches.

A structural system has the capacity to span over open framing, even though it is usually installed over a solid deck.

Structural panels have taller seam heights that give them additional strength. They are slightly stronger based on their shape, along with the fact that the span between the ribs of the panels usually doesn’t go beyond 20 inches, (they can go as high as 24 inches). In addition, the rib height is going to be higher in the structural system, achieving a maximum of 3 inches.

Finally you need to consider joint or seam types. Essentially there are two primary classifications – a mechanical seam, or a snap-lock system.

A mechanically seamed system requires that the adjacent panels be held to the deck with attachments called clips. The seams on these panels are folded together either using a hand seamer or an electric seamer. The mechanical seams come in two configurations. One is a ninety-degree configuration, also called single lock, the other is a 180 degree configuration, which is referred to as a double lock. Mechanically seamed panels are recommended for hydrostatic systems, where there is less than 3 on 12 inches of slope.

The other option, the snap- lock seam is used for hydrokinetic systems where the slope is higher than 3 on 12. The snap-lock does not require a seamer to join panels on the roof which is an economical advantage because it saves time over seaming.

The manufacturing method is also important to the architect. Panels can be produced in-house, which was the original method of manufacturing panels. However, these days, a large measure of panels are formed on portable roll-forming machines which are easily transported to the project site, saving freight and storage costs and reducing waste. Roll-forming the metal roof panels on the job site is much more efficient and will eliminate downtime caused by mistakes in manufacturing and installation or defects found in factory formed panels.

Standing Seam Metal Roof Systems Perform

Well in Hurricane and High Wind Conditions

With hurricane season upon us and the tragic devastation that took place in the paths of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma we’d like to offer our prayers and good wishes for all those affected by these two powerful and destructive storms.

The extreme wind forces from these types of storms can easily damage the strongest of buildings and cause billions of dollars in property damage.

One way to help minimize these damages is to insure that the roof system protecting the structure is strong enough and installed properly so it can withstand high wind conditions. Metal roofs prove to be a much better option than other types of roof systems when it comes to holding up to hurricane force winds. While there is no guarantee that any building or roof structure will hold up to 150 mile per hour hurricane force winds a properly installed and tested standing seam metal roof system offers building owners and architects a fighting chance in high wind environments.

Year after year, storm after storm we see many standing seam metal roofs miraculously hold up to devastating hurricane force winds. With the stringent Miami
Dade and Florida Building Code requirements more and more metal roof systems are designed to stay in place where they belong in spite of devastating wind conditions.

When designing a structure in areas prone to hurricane force winds it’s important to consider a metal roof system in your plans and specs. It’s equally as critical to specify a reputable manufacturer whose metal roof systems are subjected to and pass all appropriate high wind tests thus offering you the best chance that your roof will survive and protect the structure during a high wind event.

For more information on testing you can visit the FBC website at https://floridabuilding.org/c/default.aspx, the Miami Dade website at http://www.miamidade.gov/building/testing.asp or you can contact the Englert Product Solutions Group at 1 800 ENGLERT.

Attention all Metal Roofing and Gutter Contractors !

Multi Panel

As we close in on the last few months of 2017 it’s a good idea to take stock of your roll forming equipment or any equipment for that matter used to operate your business. It makes sense to evaluate the condition that your equipment is in and determine if it needs to be repaired, replaced, upgraded or if you simply require additional equipment to handle the work load.

In the case of roll forming equipment it is highly recommended that you carve out some time throughout the year for regular machine tune-ups to insure that your equipment is running properly and at peak performance. It is so important to keep the tools of your trade in optimum performing condition.

If you find that you need additional equipment the IRS offers some good news.

Over the past decade or so the IRS has offered tax relief for companies who invest in new equipment providing that the equipment is put into service in that calendar year.

The PATH Act of 2015 has made permanent the IRS Section 179 Tax Deduction on equipment that allows companies to write off the full cost (up to $500,000) of any equipment purchased before December 31st 2017.

Equipment purchases up to $500,000 can be fully written off in the 2017 tax year provided that…

- You have not purchased more than $2,000,000 worth of equipment in the current tax year

- The equipment purchased is placed into service during 2017

- The Section 179 Tax
Deduction does not put your company at a financial loss for the year.

So if you purchase a new portable roll forming machine before the end of the year you can save!

Please be sure to consult with your tax professional for details on the Section 179 Tax Code before making any purchases.
